Republicans Propose $34 Billion in Food Stamp Cuts

House Republicans have targeted $34 billion in cuts to the food stamp program during the next decade as part of their spending reduction proposal, Bloomberg reported. Food stamp costs have more than doubled since 2007 with one in seven Americans now receiving average support of about $134 a month, the story said. While Republicans said closing loopholes and eliminating inefficiencies will result in savings, Democrats said the cuts would hurt the poorest Americans.
